The Alexander Technique

For Musicians

Renowned among musicians globally, and taught at many of the world’s leading conservatories around the world, including The Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Alexander Technique can elevate practice and performance, prevent injuries, and overcome performance anxiety.

Shifting Ideas about Practice & Performance

Alexander students rid themselves of bad postural habits and are helped to reach, with their bodies and minds, an enviable degree of freedom of expression.

Due to the nature of their craft, musicians use themselves in very specific ways when playing their instrument. Their hands and fingers, their feet, and their vocal organs, for example, being the obvious connection to their production of music, will often employ undue tension and strain as the musician works to produce the quality and musicality they’re after.

If left unchecked, this unhelpful pattern of use can ultimately become quite problematic, leading to back, neck or shoulder pain, or debilitating overuse injuries such as RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), carpal tunnel, and tendonitis.

The Alexander Technique is recognised as one of the most effective ways of changing unhelpful habits.

Working with a trained Alexander teacher, the musician will discover more useful and efficient ways of practicing and playing with a new, more supportive structure to relieve and prevent those issues from occurring, or reoccurring. Moreover, musicians using the Alexander Technique have consistently enjoyed improvements in tone, speed, accuracy and rhythm.

The Alexander Technique integrates physical and cognitive processes into the context of music making. This skilful use of body and mind effectively addresses performance anxiety and makes playing more rewarding for performers and their audiences.
